My name is Ingrid McAlister and welcome to Womanhood.
With my background in media and journalism, I believe storytelling is powerful and can make a huge impact in our lives. The beauty of the story is that it lies in the fabric of our DNA - everyone has a unique story to tell - whether you realise it or not.
I’m especially inspired by stories of overcoming adversity because I feel it connects us all at a greater level. You see, when we experience hardship, it forever changes our perspectives and outlook in life.
I know this first-hand when I faced my own setbacks just over two years ago when as a single mother of two, I suddenly found myself spending a fair amount of time in the family law courts. I discovered a lot more needs to be done to protect our children. In times like this, it’s easy to feel vulnerable and trapped in a vicious cycle.
Thanks to the support of some amazing women who had my back, I was able to crawl out of the darkness and find my voice.
Why I started Womanhood
Women face hardships and struggle constantly, but instead of wilting under the pressure, they respond with strength and determination. I realised what’s important is how you face adversity - not the adversity itself that determines how your life will unfold.
There are so many women doing extraordinary things that we don’t know about simply because they’re not high profile. They’re doing things like raising money for charity, beating the odds to achieve their dreams, fighting for a cause and making a difference in our society.
This is why I started Womanhood - to celebrate these women and in turn, help other women who need support and inspiration.
Australian women of all backgrounds are hungry for relatable content that’s smart and thought-provoking. We’re hungry for content that empowers, makes us laugh, cry and challenges us to consider how we live our own story.
As the wise Maya Angelou once said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you", so I encourage you to share your story on Womanhood or if you know someone who is making waves in your community and deserve their story to be told why not nominate them to be featured too.
Do you have a story to share?
At Womanhood, we’re a safe and inclusive platform for women to share their stories - whether it be a story of an entrepreneur not giving up on her dreams, motherhood, fighting gender equality or overcoming adversity. Anonymous submissions are welcome too. You can submit your story below.
